Pop Rocks Candy was invented in 1956 by William A. Mitchell, a General Foods chemist attempting to create an instant carbonated drink. His experiment trapped carbon dioxide inside hard candy, but the formula remained unused until it was reworked and introduced as Pop Rocks during the 1970s. Tiny candy crystals and their crackling sensation quickly made the brand a favorite novelty candy. Pop Rocks briefly disappeared during the mid-1980s before returning to stores and rebuilding its place as the original popping candy brand.
